Iran's Regime at a Breaking Point: General David Petraeus on the Crackdown and What Comes Next

Speaking as part of the Iran International Insight Town Hall series — presented by Iran International in partnership with America Abroad Media — retired four-star General and former CIA Director David Petraeus told host Farzin Nadimi that Tehran's brutal response to nationwide protests signals the beginning of the end for the Islamic Republic. "This regime is dying," Petraeus said. "Essentially it's fighting, it's killing again, but it is also dying."

Petraeus argued that Iran — militarily exposed after this summer's conflict with Israel and the US, and financially crippled by a collapsing currency and soaring inflation — now faces its gravest test since the Iran-Iraq War. He warned that the scale of violence against demonstrators reflects fear rather than strength, telling Nadimi the leadership has "lost legitimacy" even if it hasn't lost the capability to kill. Asked about the prospect of US intervention on behalf of protesters, Petraeus predicted such a move would be welcomed by the Iranian public rather than rally support around the regime.
