Lawen Azad is the former host and producer of ‘Inside Kurdistan Extra,' a prime time English-language interview program on Kurdsat television in the KRG. Lawen is from the city of Sulaimani in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq but grew up in London, England. Her family fled Kurdistan in the late 1980s and settled in England in 1990. She studied Law at Westminster University and holds a LLM in International Law from UCL in England. She returned to the Kurdistan Region in August 2006 with her family. Before joining Kurdsat, she worked as Deputy Editor for SOMA Digest, the only English language digest in the Kurdistan Region, until it was discontinued in 2010. In addition, Lawen currently serves as the the Iraq Programs Coordinator for the American NGO Heartland Alliance.
Lawen came to Washington as an AAM Journalism Fellow in June 2012 to produce multiple programs and documentaries for broadcast on Kurdsat. Lawen produced a 2-part documentary exploring the question of identity among the Kurdish-American youth in Washington, DC and Virginia. She also interviewed numerous policy makers and experts about US foreign policy towards Kurdistan within the context of a greater Iraq, and conducted a one-on-one interview with Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad focusing on his time as US Ambassador to Iraq, and how Kurdistan has changed since 2007.
