Understanding Iraq – Multimedia Resources

In the last ten years, the country of Iraq witnessed a series of dramatic changes in the cultural, economic, political, and social arenas. The American invasion of Iraq and the forcible removal of Saddam Hussein in 2003 created an environment of instability and violence. With assistance from America, Iraqis struggled to put their country back together amidst intense sectarian upheaval and the emergence of a strong al-Qaeda presence. While the effects of this turmoil continue to be felt today, Iraqis have achieved a great deal of progress. Iraq now holds regular and free parliamentary elections, continues to expand economically, and is home to a burgeoning and robust media environment.
