Program Overview
- Hosts: Christiane Amanpour, Frank Sesno
- Original Airdate: Sep 2008
AAM joined CNN as a media partner at a bipartisan roundtable discussion to assess the U.S. foreign policy challenges confronting the next American president. The roundtable featured five former Secretaries of State - Madeleine K. Albright, James A. Baker, III, Warren Christopher, Henry Kissinger, and Colin L. Powell.
This important discussion entitled “The Next President: A World of Challenges” took place as the general election campaign swings into high gear, and the presidential candidates and the world focus on complex global issues ranging from violent extremism, the global economy, and climate change. Secretaries Albright, Baker, Christopher, Kissinger and Powell’s offered their unique insight over the future direction of American global leadership and the role of diplomacy.
The event was hosted by The George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs and School of Media and Public Affairs, Center for a New American Security, Rice University’s James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy, and The City College of New York’s Colin Powell Center for Policy Studies. Cooperating as media partners, AAM and CNN co-produced the event, moderated by Frank Sesno, director of GW’s Public Affairs Project and CNN special correspondent, and Christiane Amanpour, CNN chief international correspondent.

What People are Saying
It was an excellent program. I did want to follow the transcripts but it was not directly transcripted with the audio so I was unable to follow the wording.

Thank you for an insightful discussion. I have great respect for all of the panel participants and have listened and learned from their leadership. I beg the question; why the candidates running for President of the United states have not had a discussion on the core issues we face such as was presented on this program. Again, thank you for the sanity. No lipstick on a pig here.

Outstanding - Directing this country in exactly the opposite direction from where we have been heading. Sanity at last - that is, if the next president listens.

Excellent program - I hope Obama had someone in the room listening!!!

Every American, including Obama and McCain, should listen to this intelligent and open and most relevant debate on the world the next president will face. Alas, many Americans won't and will go to the polls (or stay home) with remarkable ignorance and apathy. A comment on Christiane's intro: cabinet members do not serve presidents, they serve the American people.

One powerful program! Couldn't even shut the radio off long enough to go in the house, finished the program sitting in the garage. Very informative and insightful. Where are the credits, as in the music during the breaks. That was even good.

Excellent discussion and a prudent blueprint for our next President to consider and adopt.
