America Abroad Media (AAM) is a non-profit organization founded in 2002 to promote the free exchange of ideas, foster critical thinking, and empower self-governing citizens worldwide. Domestically, we pursue this mission by producing balanced and in-depth journalism that helps Americans develop an informed understanding of foreign affairs. Internationally, we partner with prominent media outlets to co-produce journalism and entertainment programming that builds their capacity to educate and empower local audiences.

Development Assistant

America Abroad Media (AAM) is a non-profit organization founded in 2002 to promote the free exchange of ideas, foster critical thinking, and empower self-governing citizens worldwide. Domestically, we pursue this mission by producing balanced and in-depth journalism that helps Americans develop an informed understanding of foreign affairs. Internationally, we partner with prominent media outlets to co-produce journalism and entertainment programming that builds their capacity to educate and empower local audiences.

The Development Assistant is primarily responsible for:

  • Assisting the Development Manager in researching and identifying potential private foundation, corporate, and government prospective supporters, focusing on areas of overlap between funders’ priority areas and AAM’s programmatic interests for both domestic and international initiatives;
  • Assisting the Development Manager with proposal research and development and writing of all letters of inquiry and full grant proposals to foundations, corporations, and government grantmaking institutions;
  • Putting together supplemental materials required for proposals, and assembling and submitting grant requests with the necessary materials and documentation, in coordination with the Development Manager;
  • Liaising with current funding organizations, providing timely and comprehensive updates on programmatic activities and financial reporting in collaboration with the Chief Financial Officer;
  • Helping the Development Manager and President prioritize prospects, action items, and proposals to keep multiple tasks moving in a timely manner;
  • Maintaining AAM’s internal databases and paper records of contacts, funding history, and prospect research.

Required qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree; candidates with a background in international studies or a related field are encouraged to apply;
  • Extensive research experience and excellent writing and analytical skills;
  • Exceptional multi-tasker; ability to manage a range of tasks related to prospect research, grants management, and proposal development at the same time;
  • Self-motivated, flexible, extremely detail-oriented and highly organized, and have the ability to quickly prioritize tasks under tight deadlines;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a high level of professionalism in written and oral communication;
  • Ability to work well under pressure; seek and synthesize information and communicate it in a succinct manner;
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and energetic personality; collaborates well with others and enjoys working in a team driven atmosphere;
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel;
  • Avid follower of current affairs.

Desirable:

  • 1-3 years of professional experience, preferably in a research or development capacity at a nonprofit;
  • Experience working in DonorPro or with other CRMs;
  • Experience living and/or working internationally;
  • Interest in international media and production.
