Richard Lugar

Richard Lugar is the senior United States Senator from Indiana and the longest serving senator in Indiana history, having being elected to a fourth term in 1994. He has served on the Senate's Foreign Relations Committee since 1979, and he was its Chairman during the 99th Congress (1985-1986). Senator Lugar is also the Republican leader of the Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee, and a senior member on the Intelligence Committee. Lugar established the Nunn-Lugar program for the control of Soviet nuclear weapons in 1991 with then-Senate Armed Services Chairman, Sam Nunn, and to date the program has deactivated more than 5,500 nuclear warheads. Senator Lugar graduated from Denison University in 1954 and studied as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University.
