About Us
Submitted by admin on Thu, 05/19/2011 - 07:01America Abroad Media (AAM) is a non-profit organization that provides in-depth reporting and analysis on the critical international issues of our time for America and the world. We believe high-quality journalism has the power to promote the free exchange of ideas, foster critical thinking, and empower self-governing citizens worldwide.
To achieve this mission, we have a range of domestic and international initiatives, including radio programs, television documentaries, international town halls, panel discussions, educational modules, and journalism fellowships. So if you’re curious about international affairs, there’s something here for you.
Radio Programming
America Abroad is an award-winning documentary radio program distributed by Public Radio International (PRI) and broadcast on NPR stations nationwide. Each month, we take an in-depth look at a critical issue in international affairs and U.S. foreign policy.
Anchored by public radio hosts Ray Suarez and Katherine Lampher, this monthly program covers global challenges ranging from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, to the European debt crisis, to the global fight against HIV/AIDS.
The hour-long broadcast combines original reporting, expert analysis, and historical pieces that incorporate archival audio and eyewitness accounts.
No other public radio program devotes the same time, depth of coverage, and level of analysis to a single issue in international affairs.
America Abroad airs on more than 240 NPR stations nationwide, reaching over 750,000 listeners each month. The program is also broadcast in more than 145 countries via NPR Worldwide.
America Abroad Beyond the Broadcast (BTB) is a roundtable discussion series designed to engage policymakers, academics, journalists and experts in thoughtful discussion of critical international issues.
Timed to coincide with the release of America Abroad public radio documentaries, AAM hosts two types of BTBs: (1) on-the-record gatherings that are open to the public and provide an opportunity for participants to engage in conversation about the issues presented in each show; and (2) off-the-record events that aim to provide a more discrete forum for policymakers to engage in direct, candid dialogue with each other and with AAM journalists, yielding insights and discussion that might not take place in a public forum. AAM believes these interactions have the power to lead to more effective and accountable decision-making.
BTB panels are moderated by members of AAM’s Advisory Board, feature commentary from America Abroad producers, and include excerpts from the latest show.
America Abroad International Town Halls are international town-hall-style meetings that connect American and foreign audiences for discussions about critical international issues of mutual interest. The series began with Joined by War, a citizen-to-citizen dialogue between audiences in Washington and Kabul to discuss issues related to the war in Afghanistan. Hosted by Kojo Nnamdi, these programs are produced in partnership with WAMU 88.5FM in Washington and radio partners overseas.
America Abroad Reporting is a regular series of reports on global issues, provided by our America Abroad correspondents in the field. Through our partnership with public radio stations nationwide, segments can be heard on NPR’s All Things Considered, Morning Edition, Weekend Edition, Here and Now, American Public Media’s The Story, and the PRI’s The World.
TV Initiatives
The Pakistan Information Network (PIN), launched in January 2011, is a bureau of leading Pakistani television correspondents based out of AAM headquarters in Washington DC. PIN aims to address the crucial information gap between the two countries, providing opportunities for Pakistani correspondents to file original reports from the U.S. for broadcast on top news programs in Pakistan.

Afghan Media Productions (AMP), is AAM’s first overseas office, based in Kabul, Afghanistan. Opened in 2010, the all-Afghan staff produces a weekly television and radio documentary series that provides viewers and listeners with in-depth and thoughtful programming on the diverse traditions, history, and culture of Muslim communities in Afghanistan and around the world. The series is broadcast in both Pashto and Dari on two of the top channels in Afghanistan.
Tunisia Media Partnership (TMP), is a collaborative project with Tunisian media that provides informative and engaging programming for the Tunisian people at a crucial moment in their country’s democratic transition. TMP partners with leading Tunisian radio and television stations to produce a series of town halls on key areas of Tunisia’s democratic transition including governance, political participation, freedom of expression, and the economy.
The AAM Journalism Fellowship Program brings prominent broadcast journalists from the Middle East and Muslim world to the United States to learn about and report on key foreign and domestic issues, as well as to educate American journalists, experts, and policymakers about their countries and cultures. While in the U.S., fellows produce documentaries for broadcast in their home countries, participate in conferences and high-level policy briefings, and learn production techniques from experienced broadcast media professionals. Past fellows have included hosts from Al Arabiya (Dubai), Al Iraqiya (Iraq), Jordan TV, Nile TV (Egypt), Metro TV (Indonesia), and TRT Turkey.
